Kitchen islands – which expand the functionality of kitchen countertops and serve as a central hub for socializing – have become increasingly popular, practically a staple in modern homes. But don't jump on the bandwagon blindly when building one. To make it practical (not a useless "white elephant"), careful planning is a must. In this guide, we'll break down the core considerations for kitchen island design.
01 Get the Dimensions Right
Dimensions include not just the island's height, width, and length, but also the clearance space around it. For maximum comfort, you'll also need to leave adequate legroom and foot space.
When seated at the island: Knee clearance should be at least 7.9 inches (20 cm) deep and 6.7 inches (17 cm) high – 11.8 inches (30 cm) for both is far more comfortable.
For standing-only use: Legroom isn't necessary, but we recommend at least 2 inches (5 cm) of foot space (depth).
Height: Most islands are 33.5 inches (85 cm) tall, or customized to the user's height.
Width: Typically 15.7–23.6 inches (40–60 cm); length depends on available space.
Clearance for movement: Leave at least 29.5 inches (75 cm) to avoid blocking traffic; 35.4 inches (90 cm) is better if the island has cabinets that need full opening.

02 Common Kitchen Island Styles

Freestanding
Ideal for homes with plenty of space – it looks sleek and modern, and can be placed in the main kitchen or a dedicated western-style kitchen area to meet diverse needs.

Peninsula-style
An extension of the main kitchen countertop, this works for both small and large homes. It's commonly used in open-concept kitchens to add extra workspace and accommodate casual dining.

Integrated Island&Dining Table
Combining an island with a dining table, this design is convenient and practical – a top choice for many households. Options include one-piece/split designs, custom-built or ready-made units, so there's plenty of flexibility to choose from.
03 Preplan Utilities & Maximize Storage
To unlock the island's full functionality, proper planning for water/electricity and storage is critical.

Power outlets
Use hidden pop-up sockets for countertop use; for integrated island-dining table units, install movable track sockets on the side of the island.

Sink/induction cooktop
Decide whether to install these based on the island's daily use and available space.

Storage details
Closed cabinets under the countertop prevent clutter; add small drawers to store frequently used cutlery and utensils.
